SCWA Latest News Updates | Module 6 Week 2

Dear Parents, Carers, and Students,

What an incredible week it has been at SCWA! We have abundant reasons to celebrate and feel immensely proud of our students.

Our Years 8 to 10 students embarked on an amazing water sports trip to Malta during the half-term. They participated in thrilling activities, embraced a new culture, and formed lifelong memories. Their positive interactions and camaraderie showcased our fundamental value of fellowship.

In another triumph, our Year 12 students excelled at a STEM event held at the University of Greenwich. The experience proved engaging and inspiring, undoubtedly enhancing their future university applications. Additionally, we proudly announce that six of our Year 10 Mathematicians secured full scholarships for a prestigious STEM summer school. Their exceptional applications impressed the selection panel.

Finally, we extend heartfelt gratitude for your continued support and generosity. Let us continue to celebrate our students’ achievements, which are shared in our Latest News Page updates below.

Best wishes,
Joseph Sparks
Principal, Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy

Year 11 Prom

We are excited to announce the upcoming Year 11 Prom, which will take place on Wednesday, 21 June. If your child has a ticket, please ensure they arrive between 19:00-19:30 at the Marriott Hotel Bexleyheath. Please note that no parking is available outside the venue, so students should be dropped off accordingly.

During the prom, we will be presenting certificates to deserving students. We kindly ask all Year 11 students to check their Google Classroom for nominations and complete the necessary forms. Your child’s participation is greatly appreciated.

Year 11 Uniform & Revision Resources

Following the conclusion of your child’s final examinations, we would like to request any donations of school uniforms that are no longer needed. If you have any items in good condition, please ask your child to drop them off at their home school reception. Blazers, ties, and PE kits would be particularly helpful, and we would also welcome any revision resources and guides. Your support and generosity are sincerely appreciated.

Malta Watersports

On Tuesday, 23 May 2023, SCWA embarked on an exciting water sports trip to Malta with 32 students from Years 8 to 10. The primary goal of the trip was to introduce students to a wide variety of adventurous activities while immersing them in a different culture and climate. Our students were engaged in thrilling pursuits such as sea-level traversing, abseiling, rock climbing, snorkelling, sea kayaking, and even zip-lining across the open sea from the top of a cliff. Additionally, they enjoyed activities like visiting the aqua park, playing volleyball on the beach, bowling, and engaging in a game of rounders.

Our trip leader, James Huxley, did an outstanding job keeping the students entertained with various evening activities, including quizzes and a memorable Karaoke night where students showcased their impressive pre-prepared performances. The staff accompanying the students were impressed by their positive interactions and camaraderie, especially considering that many of them didn’t know each other before the trip. It is evident that our students have created lifelong memories on this remarkable journey.

Year 12 STEM Success

A group of talented Year 12 students, recently participated in a full-day event at the University of Greenwich. This event was organised as part of the Advanced Maths Support program’s initiative to support students applying for competitive STEM courses. The students found the event highly engaging and inspiring, providing extensive opportunities for interactive learning.

Hayder Khan, Assistant Principal, expressed his delight with the event and noted that the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They acquired valuable knowledge and skills that will enhance their applications to prestigious Russell Group universities next year.

Summer School Placements for Year 10 Students

We are thrilled to announce that six of our Year 10 Mathematicians have been selected to participate in a prestigious three-day residential STEM summer school hosted by St Paul’s Independent School. We are proud to share that all six students have been granted full scholarships for this opportunity.

The summer schools have two exciting themes: The Maths of Particle Physics and The Maths of Material Science. The selection process for the Summer Schools was highly competitive, requiring each student to submit an application form and personal statement. Dr. Ben Still, Senior Academic at St Paul’s School, praised the exceptional standard of our students’ applications, making the selection decision quite challenging. The Summer Schools will run from 13 to 17 July 2023, and we are confident that our students will make the most of this enriching experience.

Year 12 Post 18 Information Evening

We would like to extend our gratitude to the parents and carers who attended our Year 12 Post 18 information evening. We hope you found it informative, providing valuable insights to further support your child with their choices and applications.

The Arden Pastoral Team will continue to focus on Post 18 Pathways during tutor periods. In the coming weeks, students will have the opportunity to attend two important events that will provide them with crucial advice and guidance for their future decisions:

  • Friday, 23 June – UCAS and apprenticeship fair at Tottenham Stadium
  • Wednesday, 5 July – ApprenticeFutures apprenticeship fair at Guildhall
  • Year 10 Post 16 Support and Guidance

As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting students with their future career choices, Year 10 students have begun the Post 16 Options program during their tutor sessions. The program began with an introduction to different available pathways, such as studying Level 3 courses at a Sixth Form or college, followed by university degrees or higher and degree apprenticeships. Students also learned about qualifications they can pursue, including A levels, the International Baccalaureate, T Levels, and BTEC courses.

To supplement their learning, we have planned a series of assemblies hosted by local providers such as Arden Sixth Form, Shooters Hill College, and North Kent College / Hadlow College. These assemblies aim to inspire students and encourage them to consider their next steps confidently.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023, Duke of Edinburgh participants from Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy volunteered within the local community, contributing an estimated 1040 hours of service. Students in Years 9 to 13 supported various activities, including youth groups, food banks, sports clubs, peer mentoring, and many others. The Duke of Edinburgh charity estimates that the social value of these activities exceeds £5000, which is a testament to the exceptional efforts of our selfless young people.

Our participants are eagerly preparing for the expedition sections, which will take place in late June and early July across various award levels. As one of the largest providers of the Duke of Edinburgh Award in South East London, with over 200 participants, we are proud to offer this opportunity to our students. We look forward to expanding this program to new participants starting September 2023.

Student Safety

At SCWA, we prioritise the safety and well-being of our school community. Recently, we have become increasingly concerned about the safety of students entering and leaving school via the service road. The road was not designed to accommodate the current number of cars, leading to several near misses as parents reverse at the top or mount the pavement to drop off their children. While we understand the challenges of parking on a main road, we kindly request that parents refrain from using the service road from Monday unless they have made prior arrangements.

To ensure the safety of our students and staff, we have assigned additional staff members to duty in the morning, specifically in the aforementioned area. Their presence will help facilitate the safe entry of students and staff into the school premises.

Chromebook Returns for Year 11 & Year 13 Students

As the loan agreement for the Chromebooks issued to Year 11 and Year 13 students is expiring in June 2023, we will be collecting all Chromebooks and chargers starting next week. On the day of their last exam, Year 11 and Year 13 students can return their devices and chargers to the reception of their respective small schools. A staff member will inspect the device for any damages and issue an acknowledgement slip to the students confirming the return of the device and charger.

Please note that the chargers must be handed in along with the Chromebook. We recommend purchasing replacement chargers in advance in case of loss or damage. Official Lenovo chargers can be purchased from Valuetach via the eBay Shop for £16 each (including delivery). For any questions or concerns, please contact Assistant Principal Amandeep Kalote via email: amandeep.kalote@scwa.org.uk.

Year 10 & 12 Mocks

The Year 10 and Year 12 mock examinations began this week and will continue until the first week of July. Parents and carers have received a separate email with detailed information regarding these mocks. If you have any questions regarding our Year 10 and 12 mock examinations, please get in touch with Exams Team at: exams@scwa.org.uk
