Our annual awards evening was a glorious celebration of academic excellence and outstanding achievement of students across all year groups, set in the magnificent surroundings of Stationers’ Hall.

Parents, Carers and prize-winners were welcomed by staff and Stationers’ and enjoyed a sumptuous drinks reception after which everyone moved through to the Main Hall for the Awards presentation hosted by our very own Student President, Simba Nyakupinda.
Mr Nick Steidl, Master of the Stationers’ Company welcomed guests. We were especially delighted that the Mayor of Greenwich, Cllr Peter Brooks, could join us for the evening.

Award winning journalist, author, political commentator and Stationer, Mr Simon Heffer, was the guest speaker. He congratulated all the Award winners on their achievements and encouraged them to continue to study hard and ‘aim high’ in their university choices and careers.
The audience were entertained by two Year 11 students: Caitlin Cook from Ashdown who sang Adele’s ‘Make You Feel My Love’ and Calum Scott’s ‘Dancing on My Own’’ with Harry Barker from Delamere, accompanying her on the piano.
Two highly creative students, Katie Rackstraw (Year 8, Ashdown) and Emily Seaton (Year 11 Delamere), were delighted to receive a certificate and ‘goody bag’ from the Stationers’ Company as winner and runner-up in the Stationers’ Christmas Card competition. Katie’s winning design featuring a card being posted into a festive postbox was selected to be the official 2017 Stationers’ Company Christmas card and she received packs of cards printed with her design.

Heads of Schools, Ms Long (Ashdown), Ms Sudds (Delamere), Mr Ball (Sherwood) and Mr Doyle (Arden) then read the citations and presented Certificates of Achievement for each of their Schools. The Inclusion Certificate was presented by Ms Banton, SENCo.
The Stationers’ Company Academic Excellence Awards and The James Wilkes Award were presented by Mr Heffer; and this was followed by the Mayor and Mr Millar presenting the Executive Principal Award to Joshua Baker who as a Year 11, Delamere student, achieved a clean sweep of Grade 9s and A*s in all 10 of his GCSEs and also A* grades in both A Level Maths and Further Maths.
This year saw the introduction of a new Award, The Shea French-Gibbens Fortitude Award. This has been created in memory of a much missed Arden student, Shea, who sadly passed away in May this year at just 18 years old. Mr French-Gibbens spoke movingly about his son; his achievements and the ‘strength, courage, grit, stamina, determination, endurance and guts’ he displayed to overcome the challenges he faced throughout his life. ‘Fortitude’ perfectly sums up the characteristic Shea had in abundance. Elise Sunderland, Year 11 Ashdown student, was honoured to be the first recipient of the Award.
In his closing remarks, Chair of Governors, Kevin Dewey, thanked Mr & Mrs French-Gibbens and promised them that their son would never be forgotten. The award will be presented annually in celebration of their son’s life and achievements.
The Academy would like to thank the Stationers’ Company for their generous sponsorship of the Awards; catering; use of the facilities and assistance from Stationer members in supporting the event on the night.
