We are very proud at Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy that we have been able to open a Royal Marines contingent of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF). This venture has only been made possible through the generous sponsorship of The Stationers’ Company and Greenwich Hospital. Members have worked tirelessly on this project to bring it to fruition.

For this reason, there was a strong and natural wish to set up a Royal Marine CCF at the Academy. We hope this will become a source of inspiration for the students for many years to come. This has been made possible by support from the Corps of the Royal Marines, Greenwich Hospital, Leigh Academy Trust and Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy.”

Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy are now one of only 24 schools in the whole of the United Kingdom to have a Royal Marines cadet contingent
The CCF is a uniformed organisation, badged and affiliated to the Royal Marines and sponsored by the Ministry of Defence, in a join initiative between the MOD and DFE. Students who join the CCF will wear the uniform of the Royal Marines.
The annual programme of training includes weekly training afternoons, one weekend away each term, an adventure training camp and an annual camp each July at the Commando Training Centre in Devon. All uniform and equipment (with the exception of boots) is provided free of charge and the majority of activities are either free or heavily subsidised by the MOD. Training includes field craft (learning the art of outdoor living and survival), military skills, weapon handling and shooting, fitness, navigation, first aid, drill and turnout, training afloat on a variety of boats and adventure training activities (climbing, mountaineering, camping, etc)
The aim of the CCF is to provide a disciplined organisation within a school so that young people may develop powers of leadership by means of training, in order to promote the qualities of responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, team work, endurance, perseverance and a sense of service to the community.
Training takes place every Thursday from 3pm – 5pm. Membership of the CCF is open to all members of the Academy community currently in years 10, 11 and 12. Training is delivered by adults from within the Academy who have joined the CCF and by members of the Royal Marines Youth Training Team.

As a new member of the CCF you may already be a member of the ACF, ATC or SCC, in which case you could be selected to join the leadership cadre and become one of the contingent’s junior NCOs.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme (DofE) is a real adventure from beginning to end and all levels are available to students: Bronze and Silver in Years 9 – 11 and Gold for Arden. Any new Year 12 students who wish to complete a Silver award will join one of the groups from Years 9-11.
Awards are achieved by completing a personal programme of activities in four sections (five if you’re going for Gold):
The Academy has recently become a Directly Licenced Centre which has made the running of the overall programme much more efficient. We have also been able to access funding for equipment and staff training meaning that we now have staff who are qualified to supervise and assess expeditions at all levels. This massive expansion would not have been possible without the support of staff from across the Academy and the Stationers’ Company, who enabled us to improve the quality of our expedition offer with the integration of GPS tracking technology.
In 2019 sixty-seven Year 9 participants completed the Bronze Award which is our largest single cohort to date. Students demonstrated exceptional resilience during training sessions and on the expedition. Even when things have gone wrong and they have got lost (which inevitably happens) they have shown a significant amount of maturity and worked together in their groups to overcome the challenges they faced.
Alongside this, throughout the year, participants have been completing 3-6 months of their individual volunteering, skills and physical opportunities. These activities have given students a sense of responsibility; developed their independence and encouraged them to try something new. The expeditions in the North Downs have been a huge success and given many participants a real taste and enthusiasm for continuing onto the Silver Award.
Such is the popularity of the programme, over 100 Year 9 students have enrolled for 2019/20 Bronze Award.
2019 also saw forty-three students from years 10 and 11 participate in the Silver Award. On their expedition to Alfriston on the South Downs all groups demonstrated significant perseverance and a positive attitude towards failure. The level of independence that they showed over the three days was amazing. Even when they were tired they found the energy to help each other out and work together to overcome the challenges.
In addition to the expedition section Silver students completed 6-12 months of their individual volunteering, skills and physical sections showing a sustained and long-term commitment to helping others and trying something new. This experience and the Award more generally will help them massively as they move into further study and hopefully they will complete their Gold Award in the future.
2019 marked a welcome return to the Gold programme, with four Arden students successfully completing an arduous 4-day, unaccompanied, expedition on Dartmoor and a further seven students completing a practice expedition. Both qualifying and practice expeditions take place on Dartmoor, with the next ones due in the week 13-17 July 2020.
It would not be possible to run any of the programmes without the support from staff across the Academy, particularly for their involvement in the expeditions.

We are hugely grateful to the Stationers’ Company for their sponsorship of this annual project. The purpose of the fortnight is to help Key Stage 3 students understand the importance of managing money.
Staff at the Academy issue credits (pretend money) to students who successfully complete a community job or demonstrate one of our core values in lessons or around the Academy. Credits are given to the Tutor who keeps a running total for their group. However, students are also aware they can be ‘fined’ and these will be deducted from the group total!
Students learn how to invest their ‘money’ in property, cars, stocks and shares and savings. They also have the chance to borrow money and learn about interest, debt and risks.
Lessons in all subject areas incorporate an element of finance: careers, interview skills, team building activities, world finances, poverty, currencies across the world, history of the bank of England, etc.
It’s a hugely competitive, fun, fortnight in which students learn the importance and value of money and how it helps to make the world go round!
