Dear SCWA Community,

This week, I am delighted to share a series of sporting and academic achievements that truly demonstrate our school values of scholarship, fellowship, and leadership.

Firstly, I would like to congratulate Neve and Codey, Year 7 students, for their exceptional performances in the Mini Marathon. Neve’s top-10 finish and Codey’s personal best exemplify the dedication and determination of our students. Additionally, we congratulate Ms. Westray, our Student Service Administrator, for her commendable completion of the full marathon.

In another sporting success, our Year 8 and 9 girls’ football team showcased exemplary teamwork and skill, securing victory in the Blackheath Cup Final. Their triumph, marked by Ava’s remarkable hat trick, reflects our strong leadership and fellowship on the sports field.

Furthermore, I am proud of our Young Enterprise Group for their exceptional success in the recent competition. Winning three trophies, including Best Presentation and Best Product, demonstrates our students’ entrepreneurial spirit and creativity.

On this page, you will also find other highlights from across the week and a summary of what’s coming up in the near future. Here’s to another great week at SCWA.

Best wishes,
Joseph Sparks | Principal, Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy

SCWA Celebrates Marathon Achievements of Staff and Pupils

Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy proudly recognises the remarkable achievements of three marathon participants, including staff and students, from our school community.

Two students and a staff member posing with their various running medals

Neve, a Year 7 student from Delamere, represented Greenwich in the Mini Marathon, finishing in the top 10 with a time of just over 11 minutes for the 2.6km distance. Her outstanding performance has qualified her to compete in the 800m and 1500m events at the Leigh Academies Trust and Greenwich Athletics competitions in late June. Alongside Neve, Codey from Year 7 Sherwood also competed in the Mini Marathon, successfully completing the race and achieving a new personal best. Additionally, Ms Westray, our Student Service Administrator, tackled the full marathon, completing the rigorous course in 7 hours and 9 minutes.

Mr Sparks, Principal of SCWA, expressed immense pride in their accomplishments: “I am extremely proud of Neve, Codey, and Ms. Westray for their participation in these challenging marathon events. Their dedication and success are truly inspiring. It’s amazing how they were still smiling for their photo opportunity the very next day.”

Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy Triumphs in Blackheath Cup Final

Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy’s Year 8 and 9 girls’ football team triumphed with their first trophy, winning 5-2 against Thomas Tallis in the Blackheath Cup Final. Mr Judd, Teacher of PE, provided a detailed commentary on the match:

“The match started with both teams showing nerves, limiting early scoring opportunities. The stalemate was broken when Naiia made a precise pass to Ava, who skillfully netted the first goal.”

“In the second half, Thomas Tallis quickly equalised with a goal from a deflected corner. The game remained closely contested until Sophie made a pivotal tackle and passed to Ava, who fired a strong shot into the top corner, boosting the team’s morale. This was followed by a third home-goal from Thomas Tallis!”

“Ava then completed her hat-trick and added a fourth goal, taking her total for the game to four. Despite late efforts from Thomas Tallis, including a consolation goal, SCWA kept their composure. Chloe’s crucial slide tackles were instrumental in thwarting any further comeback attempts from Thomas Tallis.”

The game concluded with a 5-2 victory for SCWA, marking a notable achievement as the team secured their first football trophy.

Exceptional Achievement by SCWA’s Young Enterprise Group

Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy’s Young Enterprise Group has achieved outstanding success, winning three trophies at the recent competition—more than any other school and the most ever achieved by our students. Our team was recognised for the best presentation, best product, and progressed to the final round, surpassing even the local grammar schools in the awards tally.

Our students’ exceptional skills and dedication were evident as they designed, manufactured, and sold innovative cat toys through their company, demonstrating real-world business acumen and creativity. Their achievements did not go unnoticed, as the Director of MYP New York Bank praised them, stating, “Stationers produce an elite set of students who will change our futures, simply incredible.”

Mr. Sandhu, Teacher of Business Studies at Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy, expressed his pride in the students’ accomplishments: “This triumph is a testament to the hard work and perseverance of our students. As I always say, ‘hard work always prevails.’ We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and look forward to seeing their continued success in the finals.”

Year 7 Students to Discover Orchestral Music at SCWA

Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy is pleased to announce a series of orchestral music workshops for our Year 7 students, presented by instructors from Bexley Music. These workshops are designed to introduce students to the diverse instruments of an orchestra, sparking their curiosity and fostering a passion for music.

After experiencing a live performance, students will have the opportunity to engage directly with music by playing various instruments alongside their peers. For those students who are interested in learning a musical instrument, we are offering a five-week course of one-to-one lessons. These sessions will allow students to delve deeper into the craft of playing an orchestral instrument. Details about the instruments available, as well as the cost of the lessons and instrument hire, will be provided in an application form that will be emailed to parents on the same day as the workshops.

Upcoming Knowledge Acquisition Assessments at SCWA

Starting Monday, 29 April 2024, pupils at Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy will participate in their half-term knowledge acquisition assessments. These assessments are designed to evaluate students’ understanding and retention of key information from their knowledge acquisition books.

Each assessment will consist of twenty multiple-choice questions. The format is intended to serve a diagnostic purpose, allowing teachers to pinpoint both areas of strength and those that may require additional focus.

To ensure that all students have the opportunity to complete their assessments, especially those who may not be able to do so at the scheduled time, the assessments will be made available on Google Classroom until Wednesday, 3 May 2024.

Revision Corner: Tips for Effective Study Habits

As we approach the Year 11 and 13 public examinations, Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy will be posting a series of revision hints and tips to support our students in preparing effectively. Here are some strategies to help enhance study sessions:

Create a Conducive Study Environment: A quiet, comfortable study space is crucial for concentration and productivity. Ensure that this area is free from noise and clutter, and try to minimise interruptions during study times. A dedicated area for studying can significantly enhance focus and efficiency.

Utilise Flashcards for Active Recall: Flashcards are an excellent tool for reinforcing learning through active recall. They can be used to quiz on key concepts, definitions, or facts. Flashcards are not only versatile and portable, making them perfect for studying on the go, but they also make learning more interactive. If physical flashcards are not an option, there are several online resources available:

These websites offer digital flashcards that can be a great supplement to traditional studying methods, providing convenience and a wide range of ready-made study materials.

SCWA Welcomes PC Chris Attard as Our Police School Officer

Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy is pleased to introduce PC Chris Attard, who is based at our school on most days. The role of a police school officer is standard across schools and is not a reflection on the school’s environment.

PC Attard’s role is crucial in delivering early intervention, and promoting positive pathways for our pupils to prevent them from being drawn into criminal activities. His goal is to enhance positive interactions among staff, students, and parents, ensuring a supportive community for all.

For any incidents that occur outside of school, such as assaults or robberies, please contact the local police directly at 999 for emergencies or 101 for non-emergencies. If an incident requiring police intervention occurs within the school and is not yet known to school staff, please notify us immediately.

PC Attard is also available for discussions at the end of the school day during his regular patrols or can be reached through the school’s regular communication channels.
