Dear SCWA Community,

As we draw Module 3 to a close, I reflect on a week filled with remarkable events and accomplishments that underscore our values of scholarship, fellowship, and leadership.

This week we hosted our Annual Prize Giving Evening at Stationers’ Hall, an event that stands as a cornerstone of our Academy’s commitment to recognising and celebrating academic and extracurricular achievements. It was a night that showcased not just the scholarly achievements of our students but also the strength of our community, as families, staff, and students came together in a spirit of fellowship.

In anticipation of the upcoming mock examinations, we have put in place comprehensive support measures, including the release of the mock examination timetable and the initiation of targeted intervention programmes for Year 11 and Year 13. These steps are reflective of our unwavering commitment to academic excellence and ensuring that every student is equipped to perform to the best of their abilities.

Finally, the remarkable effort of Ellis, a Year 9 student, in raising £6,700 for Dementia Research through a charity racing event, exemplifies the leadership and commitment to community service we aspire to instil in our students. Ellis’s initiative, motivated by a personal loss, is a testament to the impactful contributions our students can make towards meaningful causes.

Our next Latest News Page updates will be published on Friday, 23 February 2024. Until then, I wish all our families a restful and enjoyable half-term break, and we look forward to welcoming our students back on Monday, 19 February 2024, as we embark on Module 4.

Best wishes,

Joseph Sparks | Principal, Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy

SCWA Pupil Raises £6,700 for Dementia Research

Ellis, a Year 9 student at Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy, has successfully organised his second annual charity racing event at Brentwood Karting to support Race Against Dementia. The event, inspired by the personal loss of his great Nan to dementia in January 2022, raised a remarkable £6,700 for the charity founded by Sir Jackie Stewart.

This year’s event saw a significant increase in participation, with 60 drivers competing in a 100-minute endurance race, compared to 17 drivers in a 30-minute sprint race the previous year. The charity race included a variety of activities such as an egg and spoon race, a raffle, cake sales, and a silent auction, engaging a wide audience and boosting fundraising efforts.  Mr Spark, Assistant Principal, praised Ellis’s efforts, saying, “Ellis’s proactive approach in securing donations for raffle prizes and sponsorships for trophies was instrumental in the success of this event. His determination to establish the charity race as an annual fixture is not just about raising funds for dementia research; it’s a powerful testament to the impactful contributions young people can make towards causes close to their hearts. Ellis exemplifies the kind of passion and initiative we encourage in our students.”

Apprenticeship Fair Visit to the Fireworks Factory: A Sparkling Opportunity for SCWA Students

Students from Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy recently had the opportunity to attend an apprenticeship fair at the Fireworks Factory, where they engaged directly with a diverse range of employers and educational institutions. The event offered valuable insights into various apprenticeship pathways, including those offered by Transport for London (TfL), teaching providers, and the NHS, among others.

Mr Duran, Assistant Principal, reflected on the visit, stating, “The trip to the Fireworks Factory was an invaluable experience for our students. It allowed them the chance to network with potential employers, gaining firsthand knowledge of the apprenticeship experience. Employers were keen to share their expectations and offered practical tips on how our students can enhance their applications. This insight is crucial for our students as they prepare to apply for apprenticeships, providing them with a clearer understanding of what is required for success in such opportunities.”

Additionally, representatives from several universities were present, offering students the chance to explore potential university degrees and the A-level requirements needed for admission. This dual focus on both apprenticeships and higher education provided a comprehensive overview of post-secondary pathways available to students. The trip to the Fireworks Factory not only illuminated the possibilities within apprenticeships and higher education but also sparked students’ interest in planning their future careers with informed choices.

Year 8 Students Explore Public Transport Etiquette with TfL

This week in their PSHE lessons, Year 8 students at Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy participated in a comprehensive workshop led by Transport for London (TfL). The session was designed to educate students about the vital role of public transport in our community and to instil proper etiquette for its use.

During the workshop, students engaged in an interactive Q&A, gaining insights into the use of ZIP cards and the crucial safety practice of tapping in on buses. Furthermore, the discussion extended to the mental health of bus drivers, highlighting how passengers’ behaviours can significantly affect drivers’ well-being.

Reflecting on the session, Ms Collier, Vice Principal, said, “Our students received invaluable lessons on the responsibilities we all share when using public transport. They learned not only about practical aspects like ZIP cards and safety measures but also about the human element – understanding the impact of our actions on the mental health of those who serve our community daily. It’s essential for fostering a culture of support and empathy among our young people.”

Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2024 at SCWA

During National Apprenticeship Week 2024, students at Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy have been engaging with the world of apprenticeships through tutor time and PSHE lessons, exploring the vast opportunities these pathways offer. Year 12 students had the unique opportunity to attend an Apprenticeship Summit in Woolwich, where they connected directly with employers, gaining invaluable insights into various industries and potential career paths.

Ms Collier, Vice Principal, highlighted the academy’s dedication to career education, stating, “Our commitment to providing robust career education is clearly reflected in our weekly careers newsletters. Recently, we’ve concentrated on apprenticeships, aiming to keep our Year 11 and KS5 students fully informed about their options. These newsletters, which students can access via Google Classroom, offer a comprehensive overview of the opportunities available. Furthermore, we ensure that this valuable information reaches our KS3 and Year 10 students as well, through weekly careers slides presented during tutor time. It’s all part of our effort to ensure every student is well-equipped to navigate their future career paths.”

For parents and carers seeking to understand more about apprenticeships and how they can support their children in making informed career decisions, a dedicated Guide to Apprenticeships is available here. This initiative underscores our academy’s dedication to equipping our students and their families with the knowledge and tools necessary for successful futures.
